"Over the last year, our CEO has been clear and transparent with our employees about the significant cost pressures facing our business. Rising medical and pharmacy costs, and surging use of an expensive health care system are pressuring health insurance premiums and our financial performance," ... "Our administrative costs comprise nine cents of every premium dollar, and in this time when we are taking double-digit premium increases to our customers, we owe it to them to look inward and take steps to manage our own costs."Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, in a statement quoted by CBS Detroit (the figures are CBS Detroit's report of the same statement)
The statement does not mention AI, and no report read tied the cut to AI. In a post five months later, the insurer said it "is deploying AI tools such as ContractsGPT and SecureGPT to help reduce administrative expenses, targeting $600 million in savings over three years", the same goal; its examples are contract review and everyday writing tools, it says AI and automation "augment the capabilities of our employees", and it does not mention job cuts. Chief executive Tricia Keith told The Detroit News in October 2026: "we've taken $600 million out of our administrative cost ratio; we're down 1,300 employees from the time I took this role"; the interview does not mention AI.
