Not linked to AIBMO booked C$202 million before tax (C$147 million after tax) of severance costs in the first quarter of its 2026 financial year, to 31 January, which it tied to advancing operational efficiencies across the bank; it did not say how many jobs were cut or where.
The reason BMO gave
"Reported and adjusted results in the current quarter included severance costs of $147 million ($202 million pre-tax) associated with advancing operational efficiencies across the enterprise, recorded in the respective operating segments." ... "Our focus on closely managing expenses and operational efficiency is creating capacity for strategic investments in technology and talent that deliver value for today and the future."BMO Financial Group, in its first-quarter 2026 results release of 25 February 2026 (the second sentence is chief executive Darryl White's)
Neither the release nor The Canadian Press's report on the results gives AI as a reason for the cut; White named investment in technology and talent. In September 2026 CBC reported White saying that predictive AI in BMO's insurance business can make underwriting decisions in as little as 10 seconds, a remark about the business, not about staff, and no report read tied the cut to AI.
